Exhibition: Elihu Vedder and The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám: From the moment of its publication, Elihu Vedder’s Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám achieved great popular success. The first edition appeared in Boston on November 8, 1884. Six days later, it was sold out. Critics acclaimed it as a masterwork of American art, and Vedder (1836-1923) as the master American artist. Now, over a century after their first publication, nearly all of Vedder’s designs for the book can be seen in this fascinating exhibition which is organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. At the Brandywine River Museum, the exhibition exclusively includes major paintings by Vedder related to his illustrations. The exhibition’s tour is supported by the C.F. Foundation, Atlanta and the William R. Kenan, Jr. Endowment Fund.

Exhibition: ECHOES: Jane Quartarone and Ruth Sklut exhibit in ECHOES, an exhibition of pulsating works that investigate the impact of echoes. Jane Quartarone and Ruth Sklut have come together to create a show of shared ideas, concepts, and practices titled ECHOES in the Elizabeth Denison Hatch Gallery at the DCCA. While questioning their perception of echoes, Quartarone and Sklut individually and collectively utilize repetitive forms that reverberate, resound, and reflect on past memories, future dreams, and what lies in between. Jane Quartarone works with a mix of organic and inorganic materials while Ruth Sklut works exclusively in stoneware. ECHOES runs from May 1 – June 1, 2008 in the Elizabeth Denison Hatch Gallery. This exhibition is a showcase of new work by Quartarone and Sklut. ECHOES transmits a visual vibration that is felt by each viewer in remarkably diverse ways dependant on what each individual brings to the exhibition. A community of artists, a collaborative experience, and an opportunity for dialogue - twenty-six on-site artists’ studios compliment the exhibition space at the DCCA. The JP Morgan Chase Studios are accessible to the public by appointment as well as during the Art on the Town Loop nights when their doors are open from 5 – 9 pm. Meet the artists, discuss contemporary issues, and purchase your favorite works of art.

Exhibition: Elizabeth Mowry - A French Connection: Opening Reception : Friday, April 4th, 5:00 - 8:00 pm. Paint-along with Elizabeth: Saturday, April 5th, 9 am – 4pm. Internationally recognized and collected, Elizabeth Mowry once again joins us for a beautiful exhibition of her new original artwork. Spending half the summer painting in the French countryside has definitely agreed with this exceptional artist. Over forty original pastels and oils will be on display and sale through the entire month of April. Ms. Mowry will be on hand for the opening reception to meet and discuss her “French Connection”. Rich hues of lavender and blazing fields of poppies are trademarks of the country and Ms. Mowry makes them sing. This is a show not to be missed. Watch for information about a “paint-along” with Elizabeth at a local garden during opening weekend.

Exhibition: Spoons and Spectacles: Silver in Delaware: Featuring the extraordinary silver collection of the Historical Society of Delaware, Spoons and Spectacles will explore how silver played a vital role in the lives of Delawareans from the earliest days of colonization to the recent past. The exhibition will include the stunning and the mundane, the rare and the common, and the frivolous and the practical. Several pieces in the exhibition are being shown for the first time.
Spoons and Spectacles will display over 100 silver items that show the quality and breadth of silver used in the lives of Delawareans while exploring why silver was used, who made it, and how it became so intricately imbedded in our culture.

Exhibition: Wyeth Women: Somerville Manning Gallery is pleased to announce, for the first time, an exhibition of paintings by the three daughters of N.C. Wyeth . The exhibit featuring Henriette Wyeth Hurd, Carolyn Wyeth, and Ann Wyeth McCoy will open on April 11, 2008 and continue through May 31, 2008. The three sisters learned to paint under the tutelage of their father, noted artist and illustrator, N.C. Wyeth, who instilled in them a tradition of hard work and relentless dedication. All went on to pursue accomplished careers, in their own right, continuing the brilliant legacy of N.C. Wyeth.
